On Dec. 26, 1876, Dr. George Whitfield Knipe M.D. was born in the Townland of Unagh, near Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland. His father, Robert, was 35 and his mother, Martha, was 37. George married Hannah (Helen) Renton Registered Nurse + Mid-wife on Sept. 25, 1909 in South Hampton, Hampshire, England.

George and Hannah-Helen had four children: Nora, Una, Roger + Bernard.

George died at home, age 65, suddenly, on Feb. 6, 1942, in Vancouver, B.C. George was buried at Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, B.C.

From the thoughtful tributes after his death, we see that George was a man of many talents and interests, and a compassionate personality who invited confidences.

Words used to describe him: "kind, humorous, generous host, man of service, scientist, farmer, Father confessor, optimistic and cheerful disposition".

"George's friendly handshake, his sympathetic approach and his ready wit ."

"Dr. George Whitfield Knipe. The recent sudden death of Dr. Knipe, of Vancouver, came as a shock to all who knew him.

"Dr. Knipe was an Irishman, a well-trained physician, a man of very high character, and a man of many parts."

"He was an amateur actor of no small merit, and deeply interested in art and literature."

"The annual dinner meeting of the Dickens Society of Vancouver, of which he was president, was to have met on the evening of the day he died and had to be cancelled."

Dr. Knipe was a graduate of the National University of Ireland (1906). He also held the qualifications* of F.R.C.P. and F.R.C.S. of Edinburgh (1906)."

George immigrated to Canada, departing from Liverpool, he arrived on the S.S.'Corsican', at the Port of Quebec Oct. 12, 1911. Geroge travelled by train to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He came alone with wife Hannah-Helen + daughter Nora arriving a year later.

 

Geroge and family moved to Vancouver B.C. in 1934. The four children were encouraged to pursue education and became: Roger - a Medical Dr., Nora - a Registered Nurse, Una - a Social Worker, Robert Bernard - a Minister of the United Church of Canada.
