  • Hannah was born in Cappanabohy and as far as I could research she had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Her father and mother were married in Barleyhill West as that is where the Callaghan's where from. Her Aunt, Ellen Donovan, married Denis Shanahan ( the  Fenian) and lived in Union hall.
In the 1829 Tithe Applotment for Cappanabohy  it lists Hannah's grandfather, Cornelius O'Donovan with a sept name "Rue".
I am trying to find the meaning of "Rue" and have come to the conclusion, I hope correctly, that it was misspelled and is suppose to be "Rua".
Does anyone know this sept name and its origins ?

This is the link to the Tithe books for Kilmacabea:

  • Brian Wickham had a website that had a photo of Hannah Donovan in it.  She was very active in the women's group during the Civil War.  I'll start looking for it.  I was interested because Hannah was a dead ringer of the female version of my uncle, Michael Francis (Frank) Donovan.  His father, my granddad, was Jeremiah Donovan who was born in 1886 in the Cork Workhouse to Jeremiah and Hanora (nee Lyons) Donovan.  Jeremiah Sr. had gone to America.  He came back after my granddad was born and died in 1889 of stomach cancer, I believe.  There were three boys in that family, Richard, Daniel and Jeremiah.  Uncle Richard died when he was about 28 of a bad heart.  Uncle Daniel married Julia Coakley and lived in Blackrock as a cattle dealer.  Jeremiah was essentially taken in by his father's brother, John Donovan, who was the land steward at Blarney Castle.  My granddad later went on to be the butler at Lota Beg (the time capsule house).  He married Marianne Egan in Glanmire and they later moved to Dublin, then up to Derry and then on to Belfast where Marianne passed away.  He subsequently married my granny, Mary Ethel McCormick.
