Henry BARTMAN was a descendant of settlers to Ireland who hailed from the German Palatinate in 1709. These Palatines established roots in Counties Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Wexford but mainly in the Rathkeale area of County Limerick. Henry was born in Kilfinnane, Limerick, Ireland. Having survived the potato famine of the 1850s in his childhood, he joined the Royal Irish Constabulary at the age of 18, service number 31938, on 10 August 1866 and was posted Cork East Division 28 November 1866. He was 5ft 7.3/4". He was dismissed from the service on 26 August 1875. Henry married Eliza/Elizabeth SLOANE in Ballycotton, Cork, on 13 September 1875.
Mary Jane, their first child, was born on 20 November 1876 in Ballycotton, Cloyne, Cork. William Henry, the second child and first son, was born on 12 May 1882 in Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa. John Walter, their youngest (my great grandfather) was born on 19 September 1884 in Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.
Henry and Eliza came to South Africa as indentured servants but Henry then became a prison warden at the Breakwater Prison in Cape Town and later in Clanwilliam, Cape Province, where he passed away on 27 October 1900.
