Harry was the oldest surviving son of Edward McDonagh (1837-1915) and Julia Fry (1843-1915). (Julia, a protestant, was disowned for marrying a catholic. Nonetheless, she named her son after her father - Henry Fry b1820 d 1874).

Harry was born in Dacklin, 15 km from Carrick-on-Shannon, co Roscommon in 1877. He moved to Canada in 1898. He married Aletta Bowles in Shellmouth, Manitoba, played violin in the Edmonton Symphony, and moved to Los Angeles, California to be near his sisters Lizzie and Katie in 1930.
