Hugh was the son of Richard Allen and Margaret Sweeney. All siblings (Mary Allen Byrne, Francis, Patrick, Richard, Thomas, and Edward) emigrated to America except John Allen and Catharine Allen, who married Owen Byrne in 1872. Catharine's children Maggie Byrne Carmichael (who later emigrated to America) and Thomas Byrne cared for John in his old age. Another son, Edward Byrne, lived in Clonmahon. The Allen farm was in Great Umberstown on the edge of the Dangan estate and they attended church at Dangan in Summerhill Parish. Other Allen and Sweeny families lived nearby as well as Reilly's, Murrin's, Doran's, Connolly's and Mulary's.
