Miss Isma Lowe, a Drumcondra native, is fondly remembered as a local piano teacher associated with the Royal Academy of Music.

Her father, John Fitzgerald Lowe (1866–1930) was born in Athboy, Co. Meath to William Lowe (a painter) and Louisa Noone. John F Lowe was a Postal Clerk at the GPO when he married in 1895. By 1911 he was an Assistant Inspector of Postmen at the GPO Dublin.

Her mother Katie Florence Gilbert (1866–1955), was born in Askinch, Coolgreany, Co. Wexford to John Gilbert and Catherine Buckley. Her father was a jutter when Katie was born and a farmer by the time she wed.

Isma's parents were both members of the Church of Ireland and resided at 37 Jones's Road (beside Croke Park) where they were recorded in the 1901 Census.  They moved to 3 Luene Terrace in 1902.  By 1909, the family was residing at 72 Whitworth Road, Drumcondra. Here they were recorded in the 1911 Census, just 6 months before Isma was born.

In 1913 the Lowe family moved to 49 Homefarm Road in upper Drumcondra.

In 1930, John F. Lowe died of a heart attack.

By that time their eldest son, the Rev. John B. Lowe was married and a curate at St. Paul's, Belfast.

Gilbert Albert Lowe was a Clerk in Holy Orders in Blackrock when he married Elizabeth Northridge in 1940.

The family continued to live at Luanza until her mother, Catherine Lowe, died in 1955. By that time the Rev. John B. Lowe was in Ballinderry.

The Rev. Reginald Kenneth Lowe married Patricia Mary Stevenson (1920–2011) in 1958 and resided at the Rectory, Rathnew, Co. Wicklow.

In 1952, Miss Isma Lowe was a registered member of the Music Teachers' Association at "Luanza, Homefarm Rd, Drumcondra". Miss Lowe was an avid tennis player and taught piano for many years from her home.

The Lowe family are interred at Drumcondra Churchyard, Church Avenue, Dublin 9.

  • Is it true the Lowe family donated their garden at 49 Homefarm Road to the local parish on which the parish hall is currently built?
