James Archibald Gardiner : Short Biography

James Archibald Gardiner was born Jul 12, 1828, in the Moat, Cornashee, Aghalurcher, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, to Archibald Gardiner and Anne J. Clarke.

James Archibald was 1 of at least 10 children. James Archibald's parents married at the Lisnaskea Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Parish of Aghalurcher on April 5, 1824 and witnesses were John Graydon, James Graydon, and James Nare. Other siblings of James were: Margaret born in 1825, Jane born in 1827, Elizabeth born in 1831, William born in 1834, Frank born in 1836, Anne Jane Gardiner born in 1836, Rebecca Gardiner born in 1839, Thomas born in 1841 and Catherine born in 1844. I learned the birth and baptismal information when I was lucky enough to view the transcription of James' Baptismal record after attending the funeral of my father's uncle Raymond McCabe who died at age 102 in 2001 and who was the grandson of James A. Gardiner. One of Raymond's children showed me the certified transcription which I copied by hand since I did not have a camera with me at the time.

I certify that the above is correctly extracted from the Parish Register of the Lisnaskea Aghalucher. I was excited to learn where he came from and have been learning more about the Gardiner family in Lisnaskea and connecting with distant cousins.

James Archibald came to America in 1850 and settled in New York City and married Marcella O'Neill who he met in New York. James and Marcella married in 1855 and they had 8 children: Rebecca Theresa born in 1857, Mary Ann born in 1859, William F. born in 1860, Sarah born in 1863, Margaret Loretta born in 1867 and Marcella Aloisuia (my great grandmother) born in 1868, Joseph J. born 1869 and Agnes born in 1872.

James Archibald worked as a Carman and in the early years lived in the 16th Ward now Chelsea area of NYC and then up to West 31st Street the area that is now near Penn Station and worked as a truckman and at the end of his life he moved uptown to the Bronx and lived with his daughter Margaret who married a policeman named Thomas McCormick.

James died in 1911 at age 82 and now has many descendants in the United States.
