James Boyd Sr (son of Anne Barrett & Hugh Boyd) did not inherit the Ballinvilla family farm until the death of his father in 1880.

Prior to that, from 1864–68, James ran a butcher's in Carrick-on-Shannon. His premises was on Bridge Street, next door to the merchant store of his mother’s first cousin, P. Barrett & Co. James leased his shop from Martha Browne (widow of the County Inspector for Constabulary Police).

On 22 November 1865, the Dublin Evening Mail reported James Boyd of Carrick on Shannon, “grocer/shopkeeper” was bankrupt and due to surrender on Friday 1 December.

On 2 November 1867: John & James Boyd appear together on Carrick Petty Court records.

In 1868 James' kinsman, Patrick Barrett Esq. bought out Martha Browne in Carrick and awarded James Boyd’s lease to Henry Kirwin, but the premises remained vacant on and off from 1870-1886. It is still a butcher's to this day (see “Beirne’s Meats” or #106 on old OS map).

On 28 October 1869 James Boyd of Ballinvilla, age 30, married Catherine Jane Shivenan (pronounced Shevenan) of Crossna (Civil Parish of Keadue). Witnessed by William Boyd & Mary Anne Shevnan.
