Hi

My name is Katherine Dorie I am looking for more information on my great great grandfather James Byrne his parents and any possible siblings he may have had. What I have found out so far:

James was born in county Cork, and baptised on April 5, 1817 in Bandon.

His parents were Garrett Byrne and Ellen Colman.

He went to London, England to become a doctor and graduated around 1845.

He became a ships doctor. Lived and practiced in Australia for a few years before he came back to London where he met and married Lucy Frankland on May 5 1857. In the anouncement for their marriage it states:

Married FRANKLAND, Lucy: 7 MAY 1857, St. George's Cathedral, Westminster Rd
Byrne—Frankland Marriage On the 7th inst., in St. George's Cathedral, Westminster-road, James Byrne, Esq., M.R.C.S.E., to Lucy,
only daughter of the late Thomas Frankland, Esq.,

I suspect with this announcement that his parents may have had land or been better off in Ireland.

They moved to Australia later that year and had their first two children there, two girls Lucy and Harriet.

They came back to London and settled in Little Il ford England, around 1862 and had two more children a daughter  Alice and then a son James Colman Byrne (my great grandfather).

James died in 1869 in West Ham England.

  • Hi Katherine

I too am looking for a Byrne family. My great great grandmother was Catherine Byrne who could have been your James Byrnes older sister. All I have is that she was born and lived in County Cork and was married at St Mary's, Shandon in 1831. I am guessing she was born around 1811/1812, but could be later. I have no parents names for her. She married Thomas Griffin and had 7 children, all babtised at St. Mary's, Shandon. One son, John, came to New Zealand and married my great grandmother. I have no knowledge of what became of the rest of the family or when Catherine died.

It would be so great if we could find a connection to our families!!

    Kate Wright.

  • Hi Kate:

Sorry just seeing this message. I found out James father on his wedding certificate...it was Garrett Byrne and his occupation was Gentleman. If you find Catherine's wedding certificate it will have the name of her father on it. I had to pay for a copy of it and received it from England as that is where he was married..Also have had your DNA done on Ancestry? If so we are on there (myself and two sibblings, same last name). It would make us around 4th or 5th cousins

It maybe a place to start!

  • Hi Katherine

Thank you so much for your reply. It could be very helpful and I will certainly search in the Bandon area for my Catherine Byrne. I have no clue as to where she came from before her marriage in Cork City in 1831. No definate age either. The only marriage record I have (I have been told there are no certificates) is from St Marys, Shandon. A transcript which has very little on it. It says Father:  Byrne (Standard: Byrne) and for the Mother:  (Standard) I have spent hours searching through the churches images and found the baptisms of all the 7 children but nothing for the marriage of Catherine. I will have another attempt. I have done the Ancestry DNA test. Kit No. A722810. My Ancestry subscription has run out at the moment, so not able to look at much on there, but did get some names up using Byrne in the search. Not able to look at any trees.

Thanks again, I do appreciate it!

    Regards. Kate.

  • Hi Kate:

You mentioned that  you found the batism of all 7 children...was James one of them? I have attached his batism record in the supporting documents.

As for the DNA I can't search by kit number ,for Ancestry you can just go to your DNA page and it lists all your connections and you can search from there, this is free to do. You can also email directly to the person which is also free to do. You do have to pay to see a tree unless a person invites you to see their tree. But you can see who you are related to through your DNA and from which line ;-). I have one Wright on my DNA list but it is a Dana. Did you do your DNA under a different name?

    Warm Regards

    Katherine

  • Hi Katherine

Last night I did find the church marriage record for Catherine!! Unfortunately no father's names, just what I already have.

No James, but am thinking the boys may have been named for the father's side. He was Thomas Griffin. Girls maybe Catherine's side. The name James does come up quite a bit in searches that I do, but never sure if I am on the right track.

    Children were:

    Mary Griffin b. 1832

    Johanna Griffin b. 1834

    Ellen Griffin b. 1837

    Catherine Griffin b. 1840

    John Griffin b. 1843 d. 1920 NZ

    Michael Griffin b. 1845

    Thomas Griffin b. 1850

My Ancestry name is katiew39 linked to Catherine Wright. I do have a tree on Ancestry, but only part of one which isn't really much help. No use looking for any Wright's that is my married name. English name on my paternal side is Aston.

Do you have Gedmatch? I find that easier to use than Ancestry. I have contacted numerous people on my Ancestry DNA list and only one person has ever replied. I have joined several of the Cork Genealogy sites who use Gedmatch and they are quite helpful, although have not been able to help with my Byrne and Griffin brickwall.

What is your Ancestry DNA name? I have put your name in the search but no matches. I put in Byrne and get quite a lot, but don't know which might be yours or your siblings?? Where abouts in the world are you? I'm in New Zealand.

    Kind regards

    Kate.

  • Hi Katie

No I don't think this is the same Byrne family or not directly. My GG grandfather was a Byrne, born in 1817, his parents were Garrett Byrne and Ellen Coleman (Colman). If he had a sister I don't know, it is possible but you don't have a baptism for Catherine or any name plus I haven't seen you on my DNA list.
