Obituary of James Ellis

Ellis -- At his residence in Chalmers township, McDonough county, Illinois. Thursday September 10th, 1883 James Ellis, in the sixty seventh year of his age.

The following is the biographical note as to his life, given at funeral services, Saturday last, by Rev. C.W. Ayling, who conducted the services:

"The departed, James Ellis, was born in Donegal, Ireland. He came to this country about thirty three years ago, and settled in the state of New York, where he remained for a period of five years. From thence he moved, with his family, to Illinois, where the remainder of his life was passed -- always exerting an influence for good and meriting the esteem of all who formed his acquaintance. He was united in the holy ties of marriage to Margaret Walker, by which union they were blessed with four sons and three daughters, all of whom survive the father. Father Ellis was of a quiet, cheerful disposition, a good neighbor, and one that cherished good-will towards all. His family bears the beautiful testimony of his being a kind husband and father, of good habits, and that not a profane word was ever heard from his lips. In early life he became a member of the Episcopal church, and in his daily walk and conversation he ever manifested a sincere faith in the means of grace towards eternal salvation. Thursday night, at eight o'clock, came the reaper - Death - suddenly and unexpected, and his spirit left the tenement of  clay, leaving behind him the blessed memories of having walked the paths of rectitude -- a life of honesty, virtue and purity."
