James Elwood was born in Canbo, Croghan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. He was the son of Maurice & Brigid Elwood of Cambo. James appears on record there in 1837 & 1839. He married MARY (BERNE) BURNS b. Abt. 1814, in Co. Roscommon Ireland

Mr. James Elwood, the father of Mrs Frank Aldrich of this city, died at Eagle Grove, Friday, Nov. 20, 1903 and the remains were forward to Tama.
Mr. Elwood was ninety-five years of age and had formerly been a resident of Tama County. The internment was at the Catholic cemetery.

Mr James Elwood was born in Karnbo (Canbo), Ireland. In 1807 and lived in his native land until he was 24 years of age, when he came to Canada and in 1862 moved to Tama Co. Iowa. Where he lived for 35 years,when he became so old and feeble that he left his old homestead and went to live with his daughter, Mrs P Plunkett, of this city, with whom he made his home for the past six years.
He was the father of ten children. Five of whom are living. Though he lived to be 96 years of age he was never confined to his bed by sickness until a few weeks before his death. He died of old age, and was taken to his old home at Tama for interment. The funeral services were held in Sacred Heart church, Sunday Morning.

Irish select births and baptisms shows that the oldest child John in 1837 and Catherine in 1839 were born in Ireland. This would put immigration to 1839-1941.
Family history says that when the family was in NY, James worked on the Erie canal.
James naturalization date is Feb 27, 1872
The grave is unmarked at St Patrick's.
