Place of migration
Migrated to /Born in Canada

My dad left Glen Swilly with 5 other local men and they all went to different destinations in Canada and the USA. I think it was in 1929. He initially went to work for a farmer near Winnipeg, Manitoba, but the following year moved to Ontario. I don't know if he settled in Sarnia from Manitoba, but he never mentioned living anywhere else. He worked for the City of Sarnia as a garbage man and then in the topping and coking unit at Imperial Oil. He left there to work selling Irish Sweepstakes tickets, which were illegal in Canada. He married my mom, Maureen Brown, 19-Feb-1955 at St. Joseph's Church and his best friend, Dan Doherty (from Breenagh), was their best man. am their only child.

  • It is funny I was told this story this morning on a Zoom meeting - I have a connection to the Gallagher family in Donegal.

I am unaware of my ancestors connection to the Gallagher family but the DNA connection cannot be ignored.

I believe my Great Great Grandfather William Cullen was born in Donegal around 1831.

The family moved from Ireland to Gisborne in Victoria Australia around the 1860's and he married a Catherine Moloney.

  • Hello,  What an interesting story! I live in the town right beside Sarnia - Petrolia.  I would be glad to go to the Lambton County Archives to look up some info for you, if you want.

Also I have Gallaghers in my ancestry but am still working on that one.  I do genealogical research for the Lambton branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society and have some experience.  I could look up your dad at least in the Sarnia City Directory.

    Yours in genealogy, Sheila S.
