James Given was born in County Tyrone in 1801, Mount Joy, Cappagh Parish.   His great grandparents were likely from Scotland.  James may have arrived in New York City in 1834.  He ended up in Coshocton, Ohio, with his Irish neighbors (See "History of the Coschocton Families," a report on the descendants of James Moore and 5 of the prominent families that in the 1830s came from the same place: County Tyrone, Ireland). James Given died in Coshocton in 1879.  His granddaughter, Bertha Belle Given Dakin, was born 1891 in Mohawk, Ohio which is a small village near Coshocton.

Robert Givan was born in 1760 in  Gortenacreagh townland, Mountjoy, Cappagh Parish, Country Tyrone. He married Nancy Graham b 1775 and they had a son Robert in 1790, possibly a brother of James??? This Robert married Jane Patterson of Fornhandram and they had several children including Anne born in 1838 and Jane born in 1848.  The family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1859. Their parish church was the Presbyterian one at Crossroads,  Mountjoy.

I suspect the parents or grandparents of Robert b 1760 were Ulster Plantation Scots but I have no way of verifying this.

Is there any way of accessing the Presbyterian records, please?  I know they were married in 1836 at the Crossroads Church.

    Thanks

    Barbara

  • Barbara:

    Thanks for sharing this information.

I can't confirm anything that you have as it relates to my James Given.

James (b. 1819) had a brother William (b. 1805).  Both married in 1844 in Coschocton, Ohio.  One married a Moore and the other a McFarland.  I'm sure there were other siblings, but I have not found any yet.

Five families:  the Givens, Moore, McFarland, Buchanan and Thompsons -  left Mount Joy and settled in Coschocton.

And like you, I believe they descended from Ulster Scots.

None of my Irish people appeared to have gone to Australia or New Zealand.

  • My lot spelt it with an "a". Givan.  There were lots of Given graves in the Mountjoy churchyard when I was there, mostly spelt Given,  A bit of a mystery.  I have put it in the too-hard basket.

  • Saw only one Given grave when I visited Mount Joy a few years ago.  Were the ones you saw assciated with the Presbyterian Church?  Which one?
