  • Eliza Wherry and John Roche are also on our family line. Julia their daughter is my Great Grandmother. Our Julia and your James seem to be siblings?

  • Hello again, I would love to share any information I have about James and his family. I'm sorry to say I don't know much more than his parent's names. I do have one record that i can remember off hand about them. Do you know if James and Julia had any other siblings or any birth or death dates for their parents? I would so appreciate any information you might have about their line.

    Thank so much,

    Mary Ann

  • I am excited to see your comment that Mary Ann Roche is a daughter of John Roche and Elizabeth Wherry.  My great grandfather is James Roche and therefore must be Mary Ann's and Julia's brother.  Do you know what parish they lived in? Did Mary Ann move to the United States or stay in Ireland? I am hoping to make a trip to Ireland this summer and want to be able to visit their home area, perhaps find some records.

    Thank you,

    Mary Ann

  • Hello Mary Ann

Mary Ann Roche is an offshoot of one of my family branches. (She married into my family).  I have had some amazing information searched and sent to me from "Ireland Reaching Out"

Mary Ann was born in 1858 in the Parish of New Ross, in the County of Wexford, as were her siblings. At some stage before her marriage, Mary Ann went to England and this is where she married and lived and died.

Names of her siblings: (Children of John Roche and Elizabeth (Eliza) Wherry:

Bridget 1854 in New Ross, Wexford

William 1855 in New Ross, Wexford

Mary Ann  1858 in New Ross

Bridget 1861 in New Ross  (The first child of this name died)

    John 1862 in New Ross

    James 1864 in New Ross

Fanny Teresa 1867 in New Ross

Sabina Agnus 1869 in New Ross

    Patrick 1871 in New Ross

    Johanna 1873 in New Ross

No baptism or birth registration is found for Julia although she appears on the 1901 Census for Ireland as aged 24 which puts her birth year of circa 1877. On Eliza Wherry's death certificate, the informant is Julia WALL, her daughter. The question arose as to whether Julia may have been adopted into the family? There is also a possibility that Fanny also married into the WALL family. When Julia Mary Roche married James Wall on 5 June 1905 only "Full Age" appears in the age column of the marriage certificate. She is a Croquet Mistress. They married in the Chapel of St Marys New Ross.

There is much more and I am indebted to "Dave" who found my query on "Ireland Reaching Out" and researched and found so much information for me.  I don't want to put my private email address in this post, but if you reply and have no reservations on providing a private email address, I will share what information I have. Unless there is a way that "Dave's" reply to my query can be found by you on the "Ireland Reaching Out" website.

    Regards

    Gillian

  • Steve,

I would very much like to know Julia's story. I see her name in the death record for her mother Elizabeth Jane, but can not find a birth or baptism record for her. Do you have any more information about her?

    sincerely,

    Mary Ann

  • Hello Mary Ann & Gillian,

very sorry that I didn't catch your recent posts sooner!

Our knowlege of the Roche family is quite limited.

As per 1901 census Julia (26yrs) my Great Grandmother was living in No.10 Cockpit Lane with her older sister Frances along with their mother Eliza (Nee Wherry)

10 year later (1911 census) Julia had married Great Grandfather James son of John Wall a bootmaker on the main street in Carrick on Suir. The 1911 census refers to Julia living with her mother Eliza. Julia had her daughter Mary and son John wall, my Grandfather in toe.

My Mother Mary treasures a fine example of Julia's lace work a skill which she most likely would have learnt from her mother Eliza who was also a lase maker.

My mother Mary has two siblings James & Tom who recall there father John referring to having cousins in the States and that parcels arrived to the family in New Ross from the USA. We always wondered where the connection was?

Gillian mentioned the possibility that Julia may be adopted but I would consider this very unlikey as I have an article, printed in a New Ross paper referring to Julia's marriage and her being a grand daughter to the well known Alexander A Wherry the head Constable in New Ross. There are many references to Alexander as an informant at court proceeding at the time. He started out as a sub inspector in Moate County Westmeath.

Our family had no knowledge of any other siblings of Julia other than Frances. This is big news for us! And is made even more exciting by the fact that my uncle James has a bible in his possession which was handed down from the Roche family. It has a page of birth entries which we could never make out who they were and their relationship to our Julia.

The Roche entries were spelt "Roache" and tally with names mentioned by Gillian.

Is the entry "James Joseph Roache, born at New Ross, in the Parish of St Mary's on the 1st Dec 1864" your James?? This entry was most likely written in by Eliza as it appears to match her hand writing in the census form.

    My email is ballytarsney@gmail.com

    Regard Steve
