Back to List

Born in Achill, Mayo in 1854 to Thomas and Kate Lavelle, James Lavelle migrated for seasonal work to Scotland (as did many at the time) and eventually settled in Paisley in the mid-1870s having also worked the harvest in England at least once, in 1872, and worked as a railway labourer also. He married Mary Welsh in 1878, she was Paisley-born but to Achill parentage and they had 8 children, 6 surviving into adulthood. Of these their firstborn was Michael Mathew Lavelle and he moved to Manchester, England (my great grandfather) and another of their sons, James, went to Cleveland, Ohio and married an Achill woman called Anna Forry there.

James died in 1935 and is buried in Woodside, Paisley along with his wife and son Thomas, and also the children who died in infancy.

It’s almost incredible to think just 5 generations separate me from James’ parents, Tom and Kate who were born around 1820 and lived through the great famine.
