James was born (date unconfirmed but about 1837) in Country Tyrone, possibly Upper Bodoney Parish to Thomas Martin and Ann Anderson. In 1855 he married Rebecca Jones at Colaghty Parish Church, Co Fermanagh. In 1864 James immigrated to Victoria, Australia on "The Champion of the Seas", with Rebecca, his mother Ann, and 4 sons, Thomas, Robert, William and John James. A 5th son Henry, was born at Miners Rest in Victoria, Australia. James became a successful farmer and landowner in the gold fields area of Victoria. Farming and a love of thoroughbred horses were continued by the 3 eldest sons. the 2 younger sons both died young. Thomas (my great grandfather) was Shire Secretary for Rodney Shire in Victoria for 30 years. He is buried in Tatura, Victoria cemetery.
