James Mulheron was born in Ardara, Donegal, Ireland in 1832.
His parents were James Mulheron and Catherine Walker. (These details were recorded on his death cert No. 2985) At the age of 24 James left Ireland aboard a clipper called "Red Jacket" which sailed from Liverpool and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in June 1857. (confirmed on passenger list with variant in spelling ie. James Mulhillen, age 24, Irish).
He became a Police Constable No. 952 on the Goldfields at Bendigo that same year. (Victorian police record) On the 28 April 1866 he married Bridget Foley (born 1843 in Waterford) the daughter of Patrick Foley and Bridget Walsh in Golden Square (Bendigo) . (Marriage Cert No. 1652).
James and Bridget had 7 children; Thomas Alexander, Mary Ann, William John, James Patrick, Bedelia, Michael Philip, and Rose Edith between 1867 and 1878. (Ancestry.com.au)
Tragically in December 1878 Bridget died followed soon after by James of a heart attack in March 1879 while still on duty as a Police Constable having served 22 years in the role. (Death Cert.) Bedelia also died at this time in infancy. Husband, Wife and baby are all buried together in one grave at the Bendigo Cemetery. (I have personally been to grave site). The 6 remaining Children became orphans at this point. It is believe that the children were cared for by another local family but little was known about the circumstances by family members. James Mulheron was my 2nd great Grandfather. I have many used Ancestry.com to research the family history and all my searches for irish records have come to nil thus far.
