James O'Hara was born in Corsallagh Townland, Cloonacool RC Parish (Achonry Civil Parish), County Sligo, Ireland, on December 10, 1864, He was baptized at St. Michael's Church as were his six siblings. His father, John O'Hara was 26 and his mother, Mary Sweeney, was 24. His parents were married 9 October 1859 at St. Michael's Church in Cloonacool. He lived there until at age 16, when the family emigrated to Wilmington, Delaware, USA. He married Margaret V Filliben on October 8, 1914, in Wilmington, Delaware. They had three children during their marriage. He died on January 1, 1952, in Wilmington, Delaware, at the age of 87, and was buried there.
