Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1846 (circa)
New Type James Owens was born in Tobercurry/Tubbercurry, County Sligo, Ireland about 1846, son of James Owens (a labourer at the time of his son’s marriage in 1874.) No information has been found regarding his mother or ancestry, although Owens is a common Welsh name. Nothing is known about James’ childhood or early life. In 1871, aged 22, James was working as a Shipman in a Provision Dept. and boarding with James Anderson, his wife Ellen and two children at 48 William St, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. The Andersons were also originally from Ireland. Anderson was a labourer in an ironworks. On Nov 3rd,1874, James (aged 28) married Annie Nolan (aged 22) in St. Alexander’s Chapel (Catholic) Kirkdale, Liverpool. James was still living at 48 William St, Birkenhead. About 1875, James and Annie had a daughter Mary E. in Birkenhead. Then in Jan 1877 another daughter Margaret was also born in Birkenhead. (Margaret later married James McCabe and lived in Birkenhead until she died in 1938 aged 61). In 1881, James (now aged 32) and Annie (aged 27) were living at 164 Brook St, Birkenhead, with Margaret aged 4, an infant daughter Annie (2 mths) and Annie’s brother Samuel, a scholar aged 14. (There is no mention of Mary E. on the 1881 census – where was she living?) James was employed as a Provision Dealer. (Baby Annie may not have lived - there is no further mention of her.) About 1883 James and Annie had another daughter Mary, born in Ireland, perhaps on a visit home. Then, about 1885, a son Edward was born, followed about 1890 by another daughter Ellen, both in Birkenhead. In 1891 James, Annie and their five children were living in 3 rooms in a boarding house at 53 Wood St, Birkenhead. James, aged about 40, was employed as a labourer at the docks. Mary E, now aged 16, is living there, Margaret 14, Mary 8, Edward 6 and Ellen 1. On July 3rd,1892, James and Annie had another son, Robert Joseph. They were now living at 222 Brook St, close to a previous address. James was still a dock labourer, now aged about 43. About 1895, James and Annie had another son, John, born in Birkenhead. By 1901 James (now aged about 51) was working as an Insurance Agent. James, Annie and three sons, Edward, Robert and John, were living at 43 Henry St, Birkenhead, close to William St where James first boarded. Edward was now 15 and working as a shipyard labourer, Robert was 8 and John 6. There is some evidence that James and Annie had separated by 1909. Robert’s army records for Nov 1st 1909 show James (aged about 60) living in Sheffield, Yorkshire, at 106 South View Cres. Annie, Edward and John’s address is 102 Brook St, Birkenhead. James is also not living with Annie in 1911 at 102 Brook St, just their son John (aged 16), labourer at a motor works. However, James may have already died, as his death date is not known.
