Born in Ireland circa 1815, according to US censuses. Married to a native of Kilmihil Parish, County Clare. Unknown whether they married in Ireland or USA, but wife's oldest brother was a close associate. Was living in Ellicottville, New York by early 1853. He was probably the James Purcell recorded as having been evicted from his cottage in Ballyduneen Townland, Kilmihil Parish, in 1848. His father was probably the James Purcell listed in the 1826 Tithe Applotment record in Gortygeeheen Townland in Clondagad Parish, bordering Kilmihil on the east side. DNA matches connect me to Purcells living in Drumcliff Townland, part of Ennis.
