James Snoddy the seventh and youngest known child of Thomas and Jane Agnew Snoddy, was born in 1827 in County Antrim, Ireland, now Northern Ireland. The first record found for him is the 1831 Templepatrick Presbyterian Church Census where he is listed with his parents and siblings. The church was located in the Townland of Cotton Mount in Templepatrick Parish, Antrim. He is not listed in the 1851 church census.
In 1854 when he was age 24 James emigrated from Ireland aboard the ship "Cumberland" sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia. There was a Hugh Snoddy, age 16, aboard that same ship. This was probably James' nephew Hugh Wylie, son of his brother Matthew. Three years later James married Mary McCallister/McAllister at the Ninth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Hugh and Mary Wylie were witnesses to their marriage. James and Mary had five children, Jane/Jennie, William, Robert, Hugh and Catherine.
James used the name Sneeden after arriving in the United States, but after the Civil War, resumed using the Snoddy name. His brother William used the name Sneden after he arrived in the United States.
It does not appear that James became a naturalized citizen of the United States. The 1900 census question regarding naturalization is marked n/a. The citizenship questions on the 1910 census are not answered.
James enlisted in Army on June 19, 1861, in Philadelphia, PA as a 1st Sergeant. He was assigned to Company F, 69th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. After James was discharged he lived in Philadelphia where he worked as a laborer. In August of 1863 he moved to Pittsburgh where he worked in a rolling mill. In January of 1865 he moved to Allens Mills, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania where he worked at a sawmill. James died in July of 1917 and is buried in the Beechwoods Cemetery in Washington Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.
