Migrated to/Born in USA

Jeremiah Driscoll emigrated from County Cork sometime prior to 1841.    I have no clue as to the location of their home county, parish or township in County Cork. He was in Louisville, Kentucky, USA by  9 Feb 1841.    The 1841 date is the date of his marriage in Louisville to an American, Martha Jane Townsend b 1828.  Yes, she was age 13.  The wedding was performed by a priest but not by a Driscoll priest.   Jeremiah died @ 1847 leaving a son behind, Shandy or Chaundy Holland Driscoll b 1842.  Jeremiah was my maternal grandmother's grandfather.

Jeremiah's son, Shandy, interestingly enough, also died young.  He was in a trainyard in Ohio, USA and stepped out of the way of an oncoming train directly into the path of another train.   My grandmother was five months old.   Her mother raised seven children alone scrambling to make ends meet.  These were tough people.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1820 (circa)
Date of Death 1st Jan 1847 (circa)

Comments

  • I grew up hearing the same story where Shandy moved away from an oncoming train to watch it pass only to stand in the path of another train coming up from behind.  Yes, I always knew of him as "Shandy Holland Driscoll" rather than "Chaundy."  Shandy was my mother's mother's mother's father.  The story I heard was that someone on the Driscoll side changed their name from O'Driscoll to Driscoll after moving to the US.  Now that I read some history the name may have changed in Ireland rather than the US.
