  • Hi Kathy,

Yes I believe the family homestead is in that area but I don't believe there is any settlement to view these days.  My attempt with these various Twohig families was to attempt to link them to my My Mother in Law.  She was hoping to unearth her Grandfather's Birth Place.  If you are over it would be great to meet up and compare notes or if there is some way I can help and try clarify your connection please give me any details you might have and will see what I can do.  The Twohigs in the Ballinagree area went under 4 or 5 different appendiges.  There were the "Dan" Twohigs, the "Den" Twohigs, The "Johnny" Twohigs, etc.  The Family Tree Report I have above can be viewed at from this context.  The descendents of say Denis Twohig and Daniel Twohig would have been referred to in this manner.  Good luck with your continued search and as I said if I can be of any assistance please let me know.

    Regards,

    Frank

  • I can find the property that I visited on current property maps on Landdirect.ie , and correlate to Griffiths map (FindMyPast)  https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=OR%2FGRIFF%2FMAPS%2F5105&parentid=OR%2FGRIFF%2FMAP-PLAN%2F1669028 The current homes are within a larger (7B) on Griffiths map.

Griffiths lists John and Jeremiah Tuohig in same townland https://www.findmypast.com/search/results?_page=9&datasetname=griffith%27s%20valuation%201847-1864&townland=knocknagappul

I would like to attach the image but cant seem to on this post. If you contact me at kellslax@aol.com I can send you what I have.

I believe that my connected Cronins were at Rylane Cross, married into the Twohig line and my current contact is Cotter. I have an older cousin (90's) that I need to ask a few more questions before I leave! She had visited this farm many years ago.

The Cronin connection to me is through cousins. My great grandmother Margaret Cronin was from Aghabullogue (Derryroe), b. Apr 1863 daughter of Denis Cronin and Mary Greany. My great grandfather James B Crowley, from Dripsey,  had a sister Mary, she married a Denis Cronin that is connected to the Knocknagappul family. The Cronins get me so confused! Too many Daniel, Denis and John to follow.

    Thanks- Kathy

  • Hi Frank. Came across this post while searching for info on my great great grandad, Jeremiah Twohig. Found a photo of him in an album when my gran's baby sister died. He was a fascinating character, a principal of a school who had been involved in the land League wars wher both he and his brother James-both mentioned above -were jailed for 15 years by the government of the time. Not sure how long they spent in jail info available on line. He is also mentioned as having given arms from the 1800s to the rebels during 1916 in Cork-info available in theIrish military records. I'll see if I can send them to you. Cheers. Órla

  • Hi Frank, I have a Jeremiah Twohig b. 1851 (baptised in Illaneinigh) in my family. He was born to Pat Twohig and Ellen Sullivan. He became a national teacher after attending the Inchigeela Model School and pursuing further studies at teacher training college - he attended the Glasnevin Institute in Dublin. He then returned to Cork and taught at Ballingeary B. National School. Jeremiah married Margaret O'Leary in 1877 and had 4 children: Ellen (Shorten), Patrick Joseph, Julia (Creedon), and Michael. They lived in Kilmore, Bealanageary. Margaret passed in 1900 and Jeremiah did not re-marry. Ellen and Julia stayed in the area, Michael studied to become a doctor and lived/worked in Bantry, and Patrick J. (my grandma's grandad) moved to Dublin and worked in the Guinness Factory as an electrician. Most of the family is buried at the old cemetery in Inchigeelagh - view here.

I believe this Jeremiah is the schoolteacher Òrla mentioned above - Jeremiah and his family were involved with the Land League and whiteboy activities. Jeremiah was indeed charged and sentenced for this but I am unsure if he served. In 1905 he is listed as having served as a teacher for 33 years and currently serving as principal of Ballingeary B. (See the NLI source here). That would indicate he'd been serving as a teacher since 1871 so I've been trying to piece it together. It is possible we have two Jeremiah Twohigs - but hard to know!

Hope this might be helpful, let me know if you'd like to chat.

  • Hi Aoife and Frank- Aoife, you're a cousin! The Patrick you mention was my gran's dad! Her name was Mairead and I have loads of photos of Patrick and his family which I found after his youngest daughter, Una, died. I remember my gran talking about Uncle Michael- I think I have a photo of him with all his kids. You have really brought Jeremiah to life. How did you find out so much about him and who and where are you exactly?!

  • Órla - nice to meet you - I'm in the States but my parents are from Rathfarnham. Marie and Ray are my grandparents and I knew Una! When Una and the other Twohig aunts were still alive, Ray put together a tree with them and did some independent research. Over the past few years I've done some work on his family tree and on the Twohig tree and made a few discoveries along the way. :) What is your email? I can follow up on there.

  •

Ah Aoife-I know your family well. I was in school with your mum Marie, in the same class! Ask her does she remember Mrs Sweeney-she terrified us for four awful years. Your granny Marie and my mum Maeve are cousins and great pals. I remember your dad Frank well. My parents met at yours' wedding I believe. (We are also from Rathfarnham) I'd love to hear about your research. I've so many photos to send you. I use orlawright@yahoo.co.uk   Drop me a line  xx
