Johanna, daughter of James Divane and Mary Dwyer, was born in Boherlahan circa 1799 and married Patrick Dowling (Dolan/Dooling) from Caher.  They were married in 1827 with her mother and a Peggy Divane as her witnesses.  She and Patrick had three children that we know of.  Their daughter Mary arrived in Sydney Australia in 1852, travelling with her Dowling cousins.  She married Thomas Hackett from Curraghtarsna Tipperary in 1853 in Sydney.  Johanna and Patrick with Michael and a niece Catherine arrived in Sydney in 1854.  The family then followed their Dowling relatives to Melbourne and then out to a little place called Derby which is near Bendigo, Victoria Australia and both Patrick and Johanna Dowling and Thomas Hackett and Mary Dowling selected land there - approx 100 acres each.  Johanna kept house but also worked on the farm and helped with her grandchildren while Patrick worked as a carter between Derby and Bendigo - which had flourished because of its rich gold deposits.   When Patrick died in 1878, the Hacketts and Johanna sold their farms and moved to Melbourne where Johanna died in 1887.  Considering how hard it would have been in the bush, both Patrick and Johanna lived to ripe old age and were the antecedents of a great number of  flourishing and fortunate Australians who nevertheless, cherish their Irish background!

  • Thankyou Tom - I did not have the record of the baptism of James  but I have his sister Mary and also the marriage record as per Ancestry and Find My Past.  I was under the impression that all the Cashel and Emly records were available via both these sites.  I am glad you showed me this.  I don't think there were any more children other than Mary, Patrick and James who may have died before they left Ireland as the death certificates in Australia list the children and their ages or whether they are deceased.

    Again, thank you.
