John Andrew Tubridy was born to Patrick Tubridy and Jane Waldron on 8 August 1896 in Ballygowan, Kilcolman, County Mayo.  He was the older of two children born to this family with his sister, Mary Margaret Patricia’s date of birth in 1902.   John Andrew was known informally as Sean.
Sean’s parents were schoolteachers and Gaelic scholars who taught at Scoil Mhic Dara in nearby Carraroe.  They were a part of an active Gaelic affairs group including Roger Casement who set up free school dinners at Scoil Mhic Dara.
Sean and his sister resided with their parents in Galway.  Sean later attended Blackrock College where he was enumerated in the 1911 Census.

He became a medical doctor and returned to work in Connemara, Galway where he fought against the epidemics of cholera, typhus and Spanish Flu which struck many people in that area. On 5 February 1929, he married Katherine Ryan at Booterstown Church in Dublin.  His occupation was listed as a Medical Doctor residing in Bealodangan, Connemara, Galway.   Katherine was living in Dublin at the time of her marriage in Dublin.  She and Sean returned to Galway.

Sean continued to practice medicine for many years in Galway.  He was also active in Gaelteacht matters and he co-founded Muintir na Gaelteachta with two other members who were active in the Gaelteacht movement.
Sean ran for political office and was elected from Galway to be a T.D. in 1927 where he served until 1932.  He lost his seat at that time.
However, he ran for office again and he returned to the Dail in 1937 and represented Galway West until his death on 10 July 1939 at aged 43. His son, Patrick later became a medical doctor and his grandson is the noted RTE presenter, Ryan Tubridy.
