He died no doubt heartbroken on November 12, 1863 two months after his son Edward was killed in the area's first murder. Originally went by the name John B, later he lived in Hamilton and then moved to the USA and became known as John Hamilton Kearney.

His first wife Helen Carragher died in 1831 the same year as their second child was born. She probably died giving birth which was common in those days. He remarried Rose Mckeown and had 8 more children.
