John Bannon was born circa 1816 in County Cavan. He married Bridget Flood and their first child, Annie, was born circa 1835. Son James was born circa 1839 and daughter Mary was born circa 1845. In May of 1845 the family emigrated to Philadelphia on the St. Lawrence, which set sail from Liverpool. Traveling with them was a Mary Anne Flood, age 22, presumably Bridget's sister. The ship's manifest listed John's occupation as a Turner. Known relatives in Philadelphia were John Kernan (born circa 1838) and (born circa 1832).
