Migrated to/Born in Australia

Born 1817 Moore, county Roscommon to Catherine (catherina) Burke, John immigrated to Australia on the Runnymede arriving Sydney in August 1841 married Catherine Donohough from Roscommon who he had met on the voyage to Sydney, they settled in Cooma in N.S.W having 12 children, my great great grandfather George being one of them.
He was listed as a farm labourer, on the ships passenger list, his mother Catherine (catherina) listed as a widow, I am still attempting to trace his father as no mention is made of him on the ships lists

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1817

  • Hi,

Im having difficulties understanding some of the information.

You mentioned Catherine Burke, and then ? married Catherine Donohough.

Are Catherine Burke & Catherine Donohough connect??

  • Hi noel, first Catherine Burke is his mother a widow according to his immigration papers no mention of his father on the paperwork, he married Catherine Donohough in Sydney after the Runnymede docked in Sydney, I have Kelly's in my family tree also from the Roscommon area on my grandmother's side.
Just reread the comment I can see the confusion

  • Hi,

I was going to suggest looking up Welcome to Irish Genealogy - Irish Genealogy to see if you could find John mother death cert in the civil records.

But you mentioned that on the ships passenger list Catherine was referenced so I am assuming she travelled with him to Sydney?

How did you know they came from Moore would that have been on the passenger list? Or do you have another document that might tells us a little more?

I looked up Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie) and their were'nt to many Burkes families in the area which might help narrow your search possibly.

I beleive there are Burkes still in that general area. (CULLIAGHMORE)

  • Hi,

I did also find the passenger list from the Runnymede 30 Aug 1841 & spotted John 5 rows down NRS5316/4_4788/Runnymede_30 Aug 1841/ (nsw.gov.au).

There was another female passenger with the surname Anne Burke on page 6 but she was 17 & from another part of Ireland.

Maybe if you attach what you have & send it to my email address, its noelpkelly@gmail.com I can have a look just to have another set of eyes look at it.
