John Campion married Catherine (Kitty) Commerford in Freshford, Kilkenny in 1832.  Their son John was baptized in Freshford the previous June.  The couple had three children, John, Patrick (1834) and Mary (1835), in Ireland and emigrated about 1837 to America.  They settled in Albany, NY and eventually had a total of 11 children: John, Patrick, Mary, Ellen (1838, Vermont), William, James, George, Martin, Catherine, Edward and Joseph.  John married Eliza Mordan and had several children.  However, he died in 1860, probably from an accident as a teamster.  Only his son Michael, grandchild of John and Catherine,  survived to become an adult.  The other children took up various occupations and their descendants can still be found in the Albany area. His son George was a carpenter who became an undertaker and the Campion funeral home operated in Albany for three generations.

He died in Albany, NY and is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands,NY.

  • Michael Campion, son of John Campion and Eliza Mordan (Mordaunt) is my great grandfather, and I am searching for Mordaunt connections in Ireland. Michael appears to be the only child of the marriage who survived to adulthood.  I have identified two other sons who died very young.   Eliza Campion appears in the Albany city directory until 1863.  I suspect she may have remarried as she was still a relatively young woman when widowed.  I have been unable to find her date of death or place of burial, so I have been unable to track her back to Ireland.  (Death certificates in New York state list parents' names and place of birth.)  My research leads me to believe Eliza was from Wexford or Wicklow.

Michael Campion married Honora Mary Sheehan and had four sons and a daughter: John, George, Edward, James and Catherine.  He had a prior marriage to ??? Albert who died leaving a daughter Mae, who married a Flagler.
