Although his parents were from Wicklow, John was actually born at Crettyard House in Laois, where the family had moved. John entered the military and appears ro have remained for his life. He inherited land in Laois when his father died in 1862 but did not return. His mother and some siblings may have continued to live there for a period, but eventually they seem to have moved to Dublin where John died unmarried in 1894.
His great uncle, John Edge of Clonbrook House, was very instrumental in arranging and perhaps financing the emigration of Wicklow relatives to Ontario in the 1840s.
