John emigrated to the coal mining region of Tremont, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, United States, possibly arriving on the ship Monongahela in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States on 13 Oct 1846. His brother Martin also immigrated to the area. John married Bridget Walsh, also a native of Ireland. They operated an inn in Tremont and had 11 children:
