John Donovan was born in about 1832-3 to Daniel Donovan and Mary White of Richfordstown. In 1849 he sailed to Canada and worked for a carriage maker in Thorold, Welland, Ontario. In about 1856 he married Catherine Leary and by 1861 the couple was living on Palace Street in York (Toronto) and had two daughters, Maryanne and Catherine Ellen. Their sons John, James Francis, and Daniel were born in York in the following years. John continued to work as a wheelwright and carriage maker for the rest of his life. In 1868, John and his family moved to Salem, Essex, Massachusetts, where he joined his sisters Catherine Donovan Joyce, Hannah Donovan Farrell, Julia Donovan Carney, and Ellen Donovan.
His wife's family, headed by Edward Leary, had established a successful business in York, and, in about 1880, John and Catherine inherited a portion of it.
John lived to about the age of 90, dying on 3 March 1922 in Salem.
