  • John DOOHAN is my GGG-grandfather.  My information stops at him.  I would love to trace his line, and his wife's, back a little further.  Can anyone assist?

    Hi Margaret and Lindsay

Margaret we’ve already established a family connection through Ancestry DNA but I wondered if you have taken the test Lindsay?

Margaret and I connected a few years ago before we knew there was a definite connection exploring the Doohan connections.  My great grandmother was Ellen Doohan and she married Bernard Conaghan in Grafton in 1862.  Ellen’s parents were James Doohan and Mary Ferry.  It is inspected that Ellen and John were cousins.  Incidentally I have saved many stores of John and Ellen and their children over the years because I believed there was a connection.  And there was.

I am also interested in your Kenny connections. My grandmother was Mary Ann Kenny and she married Cornelius Conaghan.  Perhaps connected on two sides.  I would love to hear your thoughts.

  • Hi Mary,

Yes I have done the Ancestry DNA test - the results should be in there somewhere with potential matches (I'll check mine later today).

Margaret and I are definitely related through the DOOHAN line, so if you and Margaret are too, then we must be.

As for the KENNY connection, if your Mary Ann KENNY's parents were Alexander David KENNY and Eliza Jane CURRAN, then we are related since Alexander's father Eugene KENNY is my 3-G-Grandfather.

  • Hi Mary

I didn't realise that your gggrandmother was also a Ferry. Same as me. Grace Ferry who married James Gallagher or Ellen Doohan's (Gallagher) parents. So we must be connected on the Doohan and Ferry/Gallagher side

  • Hi Mary, Marg and Lindsay

Ann Carroll born about 1853 Tory Island.  (Ann is my husbands, Kevin's Great Grandmother) Ann arrived in New Zealand 1876.  Ann's sister and brother Bridget Carroll and Hugh Carroll arrived in Australia about 1858 and may have lived in Dubbo,Australia.

Kevin has had his DNA done through Ancestry. Kevin has a connection with Jimmy Doohan and McClafferty family.  On the ship to New Zealand were families, Edward and Margaret Doohan,Divers and a single woman Margaret Doohan aged 19years.

Would the Carroll  family be any connection to your families?

    Hi Mary Margaret & Lindsay

Mary Jimmy Doohan also connects to our family, are there any other Doohan you can see? I’ve just searched for people with Carroll in their trees and I’ve found hundreds.  Does Kevin have a user I could search for?

  • Hi Mary

No  A106695 The only information we have is that Ann was born in Tory Island and her brother Hugh and sister Bridget was trying to contact Ann about 1858. We have really come to a brick wall.  Ann Carroll married John McAvoy in 1879 in New Zealand.  John's father was Hugh McAvoy born about 1811 in Ireland and thats all the information we have found out about Hugh.

  • Hi Mary,

I am researching Hugh and James Doohan from Tory Island, who left in the late 18th century; Hugh settled in Meenaclady; James settled in Drumnatinny. You mentioned that siblings Hugh and Bridget Doohan wrote to their sister Ann about 1858. Do you have any more information about Hugh and Bridget? Birth/death dates, where they resided in 1858? Thanks, Leslie in Seattle

  • Hi Leslie

Hugh and Bridget Carroll arrived in Australia, not sure of the date.  Ann Carroll arrived in New Zealand 1877.  Kevin is connected to the Doohan family and many more families from Tory Island, Ireland.  I have been trying to establish a connection but to date the process has been very slow. I am sorry I can't provide birth dates or place of birth. On Anne's Death Certificate it stated birth Tory Island but can't confirm this.

    Cheers

    Mary
