John Friel migrated to Scotland late 1880's. He married Ellen McShane on 31st December 1894 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were Daniel Friel and Catherine McBride who lived in Townland of Gortnatraw North in Fanad West. His grandfather was probably Michael Friel who appears in 1834 Tithe Applotment Books in Gortnatraw North. John's eldest brother was named Michael and if Irish naming conventions were followed then Michael Friel is his grandfather.
