John J Sharpe was born December 4th 1876 in Roscrea, Tipperary, the second of ten children of Joseph Sharpe and Margaret Quinlan.  Joseph owned a pub on Limerick Street. Margaret was a widow, having previously been married to Willam Kinna.
John enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary in June 1900 at the age of 23. He served for nearly 22 years, until April 1922, when the RIC was disbanded after the Irish war for idependence. 
In 1921 at the age of 44, while serving in Cork, he married Ellen P O'Keefe of Killeagh, Cork. Ellen was a nurse who had trained in England.

After leaving the RIC, John moved back to Roscrea and took over operations of the family pub, then being run by his older brother Michael. John and Ellen had 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys.
