John Kilduff was born about 1790 to John and Ellen Kilduff in Killare, County Westmeath. He married Catherine Laughlin about 1819. Son James L Kilduff was born in Killare in 1820. Daughter Catherine Kilduff was born in Westmeath about 1828. Son Michael was born in Westmeath in 1830 and daughter, Margaret, born in 1834 was supposedly born in County Wicklow. We have no records or stories to explain the move, nor do we have records of other children born between 1820 to 1828.

We do know the James Kilduff arrived in America in 1842 and the rest of the family followed by 1849. In 1860 the family had settled in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. John and Catherine owned a small farm and lived close by their four children, who had married and had farms of their own.

John Kilduff died in 1877 and was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Stockbridge.

  • I just recently "found" Catherine Kilduff Miller Duffy. A couple of DNA connections on 23andMe led to the discovery. Then I found her listed with her three sons living with her parents and two brothers on the 1855 Massachusetts State Census. The surname had been misspelled KILLDRUFF. Subsequently I found her marriage to Patrick Miller in Ballymore in November 1848 and the baptism of their son Joseph Miller in May 1849 , also in Ballymore. The Miller's 2nd son, Thomas,  was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1851 and James was born in Massachusetts in 1854. Patrick Miller was not listed on the 1855 State Census and by 1860 Catherine was married to Patrick Duffy. Sarah Duffy was born that year and Michael Duffy in 1861. My two DNA cousins descended from Michael Duffy.

  • The 1796 Flax Growers List has two Kilduffs listed in the parish of Killare, John and James. John was probably the father of my 2nd GGF. His wife was Ellen. James may have been a close family member.
