Migrated to/Born in USA

John L. Quinn (my great grandfather) born 27 Sep 1840 to Patrick Quinn & Catherine Finan in or around Castlerea. The family were tenants, farmers, on the lands of William R. W. Sandford in Cloonfower. John's siblings, all born in Castlerea area, included Margaret, James, Roderick, Michael, and Mary Ann. The family emmigrated to Aston-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England in about 1850 to work the Manchester cotton mills. The American Civil War interrupted cotton shipments to England and probably precipitated family emmigration in the early 1860s to find similar work in the mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts. John met and married a Roscommon girl, Catherine Cunniff, in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1868.  John died in Boston in 1894.

The attached photo shows John (standing) with brothers Roderick (left) and Michael (right), likely taken in Lawrence, Massachusetts about 1866.
