John, was born in Taibach, Port Talbot, Wales, 1st February 1852, according to his Royal Artillery army records. His father, also called John Leahy, was said to be from Fermoy County Cork, most likely from Castlelyons. His mother was Ellen Oddley [Audley, O'Daily, O'Dell??] from Aberavon, Wales.

John & Annie had 12 children in India, Catherine, Louise, Maude, Edmund Burke, Sidney John, Reginald, Dennis, Nora, Ellen, Gertrude Theresa, Clement Urban, & Mona. Their last child, John, was born in the Isle of Wight.

Captain John Leahy's retirement in the Isle of Wight came to an untimely end, when he died there in 1906. He is buried in Shanklin Cemetery. His family returned to India, where Annie Burke died 1930.
