Picture: Gravestone of John M. Convery and Sarah Lagan Convery

The name Convery was only to be found in Loughinsholin Parish in County Derry; and it looks from the sequencing of the numbers that they lived in adjoining houses and were all probably related.

1). John M. Convery (Manus) - My paternal great, great grandfather; and

(2). Sarah Lagan - My paternal great, great grandmother.

John (Manas) Convery was born in 1809, in Ireland, possibly in Rocktown.  He married Sarah Lagan (born 1827) in 08 SEPT 1853, together they had the following children (church records indicate Lavey Parish):

Mary - born 1854
John - born 1855
John - born 1858
Mary - born 1859
Patrick - born 1861
William James - born 1864
Robert Henry - born 1866
Charles (my grandfather) (church records have his last name spelled "Confrey") - born 1869

Killard is stated on the baptismal record for William Convery born in 1864.  This clachan, within the townland of Rocktown, and is only about half a mile from where my Converys are from and narrows my Converys down to a very small area.

John M. Convery and Sarah Lagan Convery are buried together in the Old Cemetery at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Lavey Parish.  John died on 07 JAN 1881 at age 72; Sarah died on 12 OCT 1873 at age 46.  Buried with John and Sarah is a daughter; however, her name and year of death are illegible.  She died on 14 JAN 18_____.

These Converys can be very troublesome.  When I began my research, I never realized Convery was such a popular name in the Maghera area.  They all seemed to give suceeding generations of their children the same names. The biggest difficulty is the sheer number of Converys in Rocktown. It is always more difficult sorting out families when there are many, as opposed to just a few.

    Hi,

I too have been looking for ancestors in the Parish of Lavey. Mine are the Murphys and unlike the Converys there aren't many of them. I am having a great deal of trouble in finding a baptism or birth register for John Murphy who would have been born circa 1836 as his wife Sarah Scullion was born then. There are many Scullions in this area and I would also be interested in finding anything about John's wife Sarah. I know they married on 10 Dec 1856. He could have been somwhat older than Sarah.

The Scullions and Converys intermarried but I don't think any of the Murphys did with the Converys, however if you have and records of Murphys or Scullions marrying Converys it may help my search. I have seen the name John (Manus) Convery in the Termoneeny Parish records at the National Library of Ireland NLI online so if you haven't searched this it may be worthwhile. It takes a lot of time but if you know some dates you can skip to them. I think from memory they only start from 1846 though so no good for my John Murphy's birth.

I am travelling to Ireland in May this year and will be going to the cermetarys at Lavey so will give your ancestors a nod.

If you have any Murphys crop up in your search I would appreciate the information. Specifically I am searching for John's birth and death. I have reason to believe he moved to Drummond around 1880. I would love to know who his siblings and parents were but without birth details it is hard to know if he is related to the other Murphys in the area although there aren't many. Apparently he came from Broagh and there are a few Broagh Murphys who I think he must have been related to. I have details of his children as follows- John circa 9 Jan 1880 (not the John in 1873 he was my GGGrandfather's twin who died), 13 March 1873, John and Patrick Sarah 11 Dec 1871, Bridget circa 14 Aug 1869, Catherine circa 1867, Andrew circa 1864, Edward circa 1862, Mary Jane circa 6th Oct 1862, Henry no birth date that I can find.

Good luck with your search and if you think you have any information that may help me I would appreciate it and likewise if I come across any Converys in my search I will let you know.

  • An interesting account:

    • Your great great grandmother was born in 1827.
    • Her last child, your said grandfather, was born in 1869.

    Equally interesting:

    • Your great great grandfather, John M. Convery (Manus) was born 1809.
    • Yet, his said father, Manus Covery died in 1800.

    There's mystery in numbers.

  • My wife's 2nd Great Grandfather (Daniel Tohill, later Tole is US) was born in Ireland, married Elizabeth Mulholland,  and several of his children were recorded in Lavey Parish. His oldest son James married in Newburg, NY, Anna Convery.  Anna's birth was recorded in Lavey Parish in 1862 and her parents were Daniel Joseph Convery (1821-1901) and Ellen Martin, b. 1836.  Anna immigrated to US probably in the mid 1870's and it looks like her parents stayed in Ireland.  Hopefully this might be of some help. I have not found birth or marriage records for Daniel Tohill and Elizabeth Mulholland or several of their children.  If you run across any information of this family I would appreciate your help.

Thank you for your inquiry.  Newburgh, New York is not too far from where I live; and I found lots of Tole, Convery information for you.  I can list the information here, or if you prefer, please email me at cmatyckas@yahoo.com; and I’ll send you what I found.  I did find a connection between Anna Convery Tole and her brother, Robert P. • My second great grandmother was Rose Convery born circa 1838 and died 6 May 1909, buried at St. Mary Lavey along with my second great grandfather, William Murray(1841-1901). They married in St. Mary's in Oct 1862.I know that Rose's parents were Michael and Mary Convery but I know nothing further and would love to know more about my Convery line, long with my Murrays. Are you familiar with Rose Convery Murray at all? Thank you in advance! Best -Michele Ryan Bewley
