John McCarthy was born about 1775 possibly in the Castlelyons area and we think died somewhere around 1827 in Castlelyons.
John farmed the Townland of Ballyhamsher/Ballyhampshire/Ballyhampsherry (the townland name changed many times). He is mentioned in the 1824 and the 1826 Tithe Applotment records but after that there is no mention of John. John was married twice, once to Mary "Joanna" Myers and to Ellen Hayes.
We believe that the mother of his twin children David McCarthy and Margaret McCarthy born about 1800 was Mary "Joanna" Myers. There is also mention in then St. Nicholas parish records of another daughter born to John McCarthy and Mary "Joanna" Myers in 1810 but there is no first name listed in the Castlelyons Parish records. John had brothers who also farmed the same land. They were Denis McCarthy who married Mary Kent and Timothy McCarthy who married Julia Cronin. We do not know who the parents of John, Denis and Timothy were.
