  • Hello

I'm quite keen to get in touch. My gg grandfather was another John McCarthy, master cooper of Fair Lane, Cork city, his father was Thomas, also a master cooper. John was born c 1824. It is possible the two Johns were related. My John was a widower on 20th Nov 1855 when he married my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Roche, they were married in St Lukes, a Church of Ireland church near Fair Lane. It's possible John was Catholic - Elizabeth was definitely protestant. I was thinking your John may have been a cousin or some other relative given the location, name and occupation coincide. It is also possible your John was a son from my John's first marriage. Have you had a dna text? It could be very interesting.

    Cheers

  • I came across a John McCathy bn (1824-1868?)  who married Elizabeth Roche (1832-84 ) known as 'Lily' or on 20/11/1855, who was quite a beauty. Unfortunately he died quite young but was a Master Cooper  of Fair Lane Cork, Elizabeth his wife probably inherited a lot of money from her parents and grand parents family who were lime quarriers  and the  BLOSSOM and SUNNYFIELD properties in  Mallow Cork.Thomas Roache (1802-47) was her father and mother Frances Matilda Martin (1797-1880?).

John and Lilys chn were John Francis (1859), Arabella (1862) came to Australia, Olive Francis (1864) went to Washington US. Lily remarried in 1872 in  St Lukes Cork City Her husband was a Horman Hussler??? a clock maker from Mallow whom she later divorced  and came to Australia with her two daughters. It was wriiten in a memoire by a relative that she later went to Peru.

Hope thsi helps I have Irish McCarthy relatives and it took years for us to find them so I do wish you all the best in your searches. I have a particular family tree that might be helpful will send it onto you if you email me on this site  Cheers Jen

    Hi Jen

I was quite optimistic in hoping John Greenane's John McCarthy may have been related to mine as they were both Master Coopers from Cork City but no relationship has been established as yet. The McCarthys from Cork are difficult to pin down.
You have mentioned my family in your letter to John ( some of the details are incorrect). As yet I haven't been able to connect the Mccarthy side to any other families although I know quite a bit about the Roches.

You have done well to sort out your McCarthy family!

    cheers

    Sue
