JOHN McELGUNN (c1822 – 1886)

 

John McELGUNN was born on 11th November in c1822 in the parish of Killesher in County Fermanagh, Ireland. His parents were Owen (or John) McELGUNN and Bridgina (or Bridget) MAGUIRE. He first married on 25th April, 1845, Eliza BOYLE daughter of John Boyle and Jane (nee GADSBY), at Dungloe in County Donegal. They lived at Dungloe and at least five of their chidden were born there.

1841 - Ordered that the following men be Privates in the Revenue Police as proposed by the Chief Inspector. 1841 - Date of Appointment: 29 March 1841; Name: John McEgunn; No. of Warrant: 24216; Resigned from the Force: 12 July 1847; Recommended by: Francis Forster Esq. J.P. of of Dungloe, Co. 1847 - Saturday 20th February 1847 - Gratuity recommended Jno McElgun 62/47 - John McElgun, Private in No 13 Party; and 4 others, relinguished. Read to the Board. (Irish Revenue Police 1830-1857; Minutes of appointments; Ref: CUST111-9-0196; Page 142)

1847 - 24 April 1847 - Private John Murray on completing his instruction at the Depot was attached to the No 13 Party under John McElgun. (Irish Revenue Police 1830-1857; Minutes of appointments 1844-1848; Ref: CUST111-9-0205 & CUST111-9-0206; Page 152)

1854 October, Monday 30th - That the following Privates who have been instructed at the Depot be attached to the several parties mentioned opposite to their respective names viz. Included ... 1855 Wednesday 27th June 1855 - Ordered that the following Privates who have been instructed at the Depot, and afterwards joined parties of Revenue

Police, and who have by good conduct during the probation of one year, been found qualified for permanent appointment to the force be privates of the first Class as proposed by the Chief Inspector. Constable McELGUNN John; Appointed: 13 May 1858, Age 29, Married, Roman Catholic; Trade: London Police 7 months & I (Irish) Revenue Police 4 years; Complexion: Dark; Hair: Dark Brown, Eyes: Blue, Height: 6 feet. John stated on joining the Victoria Police Force that he served 7 months with the London Police in England and 4 years with the Irish Revenue Police.

Arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in c.1857. John was appointed to the Victoria Police Force on 13th May, 1858. In 1863 he was transferred to Alberton, in Gippsland, and then back to the Depot in Melbourne in June, 1868. His wife Eliza died on 23rd March, 1869, at their home in Punt Road, Richmond. (Reg No 2539). In June of that year he was transferred to Ballarat.

On 21st May, 1878, he transferred to the Police Depot at Richmond, in Melbourne, where on 23rd July; he was discharged from the Force on medical grounds. The next day he married Mrs. Jessie DAVIDSON, a widow, daughter of Alexander LINDSAY and Mary HUGHES (Reg No 3818)

John died on 28th February 1886 at his home at 21 Highett Street, Richmond. His daughter, Jane McELGUNN was the informant (Reg No 3297)

 

Issue:

1.  Patrick McElgunn, born c.1846 probably at Dungloe, Co. Donegal, Ireland.

He joined Victoria Police Force on 29th September, 1863, and was discharged on 25th November, 1868, on medical grounds. He died 4th April 1870 at Alberton, Victoria aged 23 years. (Reg No 3162) he was a farmer and was buried at Yarram Cemetery on 5th April 1870.

2.  Jane McElgunn, born c.1850 probably at Dungloe. She was living at 21 Highett Street, Richmond in February 1886 when her father died.

3.  Mary McElgunn, dead by 1859.

4.  Sarah Ann McElgunn, dead by 1859.

5.  Annie Elizabeth McElgunn, born c.1853/4 at Dungloe, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Married on 20th November, 1873, at Alberton in south Gippsland in Victoria, to Edward Thomas NEWTON. (Reg No 3946) She died on 26th July, 1918 at Melbourne. (Reg No 9679) See Newton family notes for more details.

9.  Sarah McElgunn, born 28 January, 1859, at Alberton, Victoria (Reg No 5055) married on 17th February 1885 to William O’MEARA at St Mary’s Catholic Church at Sale, Victoria. (Reg No 677) They were living at Glengarry in 1885 when they married. They farmed firstly at Eaglehawk Creek at Toongabbie, then at Koornalla (Traralgon South). They had five sons and one daughter. Sarah died in June 1925 aged 66 and was buried in the Traralgon cemetery on 10th June 1925.

10. Catherine McElgunn, born 1861 (Reg. No. 10765), at Alberton.  She did not marry and died on 28th October 1914 at Kew, Melbourne, VIC.

11. William John McElgunn, born 1863 at Alberton (Reg No 5511). He was listed as a farmer at Alberton in the 1893-4 Wise’s Victoria Post Office Directory, and in the Shire of Alberton rate book of 1893-4 as No. 533 McElguin W. labourer, 170 acres at Welshpool, rates were in arrears for two years. 14 pounds. This part of the shire severed to the Shire of South Gippsland. William went to Western Australia and owned land at Sawyer Valley, to the north of Perth. He did not marry and died on 21st September 1920 and was buried in Karrakatta cemetery, Western Australia.
