Migrated to/Born in USA

John was born in County Clare about November 1834 (per the 1900 US Census), the son of John McInerney and Bridget Jones, both born in County Clare.  He married Margaret Scott, born about 1833 in County Clare. The 1900 US Census states that John immigrated in 1870 but his obituary said he “came to Manchester [Connecticut, USA] in the early 1850's and was one of the earliest Irish settlers in Manchester.” His US records use the surname spelling McKnerney but it was probably McInerney or a similar spelling in Ireland.

John and Margaret had 7 children between the years 1856 and 1872. John worked in the Cheney Brothers silk mills in Manchester, Connecticut.

John died on 29 Feb 1904 in Manchester, Connecticut and was buried in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Manchester, Connecticut. On my visit to the cemetery I was unable to find a headstone and the record keeper for St. Bridget's Cemetery told me they do not have a record of his interment. I have a Sexton Report from the Town of Manchester with an entry that John McKnerney was buried in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Manchester on 01 Mar 1904

My information for John’s place of birth, and his parent’s names and their birth places come from the State of Connecticut Medical Certificate of Death for John McKnerney. That document states that his birth was in 1832 so it appears he was born between 1832 and 1834 in County Clare. I have tried looking through some baptismal records for County Clare but so far have not found John's baptism entry.

  • Hi:

I read your Ancestor Profile and there may be some avenues to research using the Clare records.  Did John McInerney have any siblings that emigrated either with him or after?  I would be very surprised if another family member or cousin (or neighbour) did not also come to the Manchester area.

The two surnames of McInerney and Jones are very good clues.  McInerney is a very common Clare surname, but Jones is limited to less parishes and I would recommend that you concentrate on those parishes where both surnames exist.  Pre-Famine, most marriages took place between marriage parties who lived within 5 miles of one another.  The parishes where the Jones surname exist are predominantly in East Clare:  Tulla, Clooney/Quin, Moynoe(Scariff), Tuamgraney, Killaloe, Killuran, Feakle and Kilfintinan.  The other areas are:  Dysert, Rath,  Inagh and Clondegad.  The McInerney name is more numerous and widely scattered, but if you look at the Clare Library website under the link here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/name_index/index26_IeversToJurdon.htm ,  you will see what I have written above.  If you look at the McInerney surname list location, I would check which parishes are also Jones surname parishes.  I would then concentrate my search on those places with both surnames.

  • Thank you Jane!  I do not know whether John had any siblings so I am unaware of any other siblings emigrating.  Thank you for these tips which I will work through.  Ray
