Born to Daniel Meara and Margaret Darcy, John was baptized in the parish of Terryglass and Kilbarron, Killaloe Diocese, Tipperary on 23 Feb 1845. Daniel and Margaret had nine known children. The first five appear in the baptismal records of Youghal Arra parish. Daniel and his older brother James were bapized at Terryglass and their residence is listed as Lisquillibeen.
Daniel emigrated first to Ontario, Canada about 1847, then the family moved to St. Clair County, Michigan, USA about 1852. Daniel's two younger siblings, William and Theresa, were born in Michigan.
