Migrated to/Born in USA

After his wife Johanna died of cholera in Liverpool, John came to America with his children, William James, Ann and Mary, in 1851. The family name in America was changed to Onahan — why the initial H was dropped, I don’t know. They went to Chicago to live. John died there in 1859. The daughters went to the convent of the Sacred Heart in St. Louis, Missouri. William rose to become a civic, business and Catholic leader in that city. He married Margaret Gertrude Duffy, and their one child who survived to adulthood married Daniel V Gallery in Chicago, 1898.  They had six children, one of whom was my father, William Onahan Gallery. He and two of his brothers, Daniel V Gallery, Jr and Philip Daly Gallery, were career U.S. naval officers. (see Wikipedia)

  • I am interested in more information about John Onahan/Honahan and his wife, Johanna Neil and their parents, where they lived, the kind of work they did while in Leighlinbridge. John Onahan / HONAHAN married Johanna Neil / O'Neil 24 Nov 1834 in Leighlinbridge. They had two children there, William James (b1836) and Mary (b1843). They left for Liverpool around 1845. Daughter Ann was born (1846) in Liverpool. Son WJ served Mass at St. Matthew's Church there. Johanna died of cholera in Liverpool around 1847-49. John and his three children sailed to New York on the ship Montezuma, arriving 17 March 1851. John and the daughters went to Chicago to live, while son William James, age 15, stayed and worked in New York for a few years, then joined them in Chicago. John Onahan (as the family name was known in America) died in Chicago in 1859. His daughters both entered the convent of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Son William James Onahan became of prominent civic and Catholic leader in the Chicago area. He married Margaret Gertrude Duffy in Chicago in 1860. They had one surviving child, Mary Josephine in 1866.
