Julia McCormack was born on 28 April 1890, the second child of Mary Jane McDermott and John McCormack of Carrowkeel. She had one older sibling, Thomas and five younger ones, John, James, Edward, Catherine (Kate), and Annie Jane (Nan). She was named for her maternal grandmother, Julia McDermott, who died on the same day she was born two years before.

Julia grew up in a three roomed stone walled house with a thatched roof and three front windows. The McCormacks lived beside the Lynch family (possible cousins) who they were close with growing up. They also spent a lot of time with their maternal Kennedy cousins from Tanseyfield. Julia attended Drummullin National School, and was fluent in Irish.

Her mother, Mary Jane died on 6 June 1897 when she was seven years old. This would have been particularly hard for Julia, who had to become like a mother for her younger siblings. Her father John died in July 1902 when she was just twelve. Julia, Kate and Nan were taken in by the Sisters of Mercy in Roscommon, while their brothers lived with relatives in Carrowkeel. Each left the orphanage around the age of fifteen and returned to live at home. Julia's brother John died 8 March 1910, aged nineteen.

Julia's cousin Katie Kennedy emigrated to New York and was soon followed by her brother John. They invited Julia to join them. She departed Ireland from Queenstown, Cork on the Baltic on 26 Apr 1912, and arrived in New York on 5 May 1912. Her occupation is given as a domestic servant. She was five foot five inches, with fair hair and hazel eyes. She had paid her own passage and had fifteen pounds. Julia was later naturalized on 6 December 1924 at Supreme Court, New York.

She lived with her cousins at 322 East 42nd Street, but by 1913 was living at 157 East 31st Street. She was in the School of Nursing in New York City Hospital by 1916. She lived with her siblings James and Kate, who had followed her out. Julia sent back money to Thomas at home which helped him expand his farm. Nan joined her family in America in October 1916.

Julia had a very successful career as a nurse in a private hospital in New York. She married Frank Donner on 24 June 1936. They had no children.

Julia made a trip to Ireland in 1947, departing New York on 9 July. She departed again from Cobh on 6 September 1947 and arrived back in New York on 11 September. Frank accompanied her on her trip. At the time, they lived at 60-15 Woodside Avenue, Long Island, New York.

Julia died in April 1966 in Flushing, Queens, New York.

  • This is a lovely tribute.  She was a special lady, well loved by her nieces and nephews--she had a home in Breezy Point NY on Olive Way that I just barely remember visiting as a child--it was a little cottage in a beach community in Brooklyn where she hosted many family parties.  I believe that she also invited at least one of her nephews in Ireland, Eamonn, to come to America and go to college, allowing him to stay in her home while he was a student.  An open-hearted, generous, and thoroughly good person.

  • I agree Ray -  a really great story and beautifully told. Would there be a picture of Julia that we could include here? I would love to include Julia's story in one of our weekly emails.

  • Hi All,  Julia was my grandmothers sister. Her name was Katherine McCormack.  She married Timothy J. Gannon . They had 2 sons John, my dad, and Timothy. I've seen Julia McDermott on a family tree of mine. I've also seen a photo of the stone house with 3 front windows....... Very small.  Timothy and Katherine lived in New York, NY until 1955 when they retired to California. My dad called Julia, Aunt Julia Donner and he spoke fondly of her. He used to talk of the Breezy Point home as well. I will look for photo's.  Do any of you know of the Gannon's from Elphin.

  • Hi All,   Sorry, one more thing. Timothy and Katherine are buried side by side in the Calvary Catholic Cemetary, Santa Rosa, California. As an Altar boy I saw them everyday at Mass. Her headstone reads Katherine McCormack Gannon

    Hi Joe

Just a word to send my regards--my grandmother Anna McCormack Monaghan.was ALSO Julia McCormack Donner's sister.   My mom and your Dad were first cousins. I've actually pieced together a decent history of our common family's roots in Elphin, and met some really lovely Irish cousins of ours who have also accumulated lots of lore.  If you are interested, I/we will be happy to share.

Fun fact: my mom and her family (that is, Anna McCormack Monaghan) AND Katherine McCormack Gannon and her brood both lived in the same building in the upper West side of Manhattan (172 W. 109th St)  where Barack Obama lived as a grad student while he was attending Columbia University many years later.  My Mom (she's 90) loved growing up in NYC, and misses it to this day.

    Best, Ray Keogh

  • Hi Joe,
I'm a descendant of Thomas McCormack, Julia, Katherine and Annie's older brother, who stayed behind in Ireland on the family farm. Great to hear from you! Yeah, I've heard of Gannon in Elphin, I think they are a few living in Creeve (just outside the town) now. As Ray said above, would be delighted to share any info if you want.

  • Thanks, Patricia!  Is there any way that you could look into a mystery in my great aunt Julia McCormack's family tree for me?

I have a cousin who has done a truly amazing job researching Julia's maternal line, the McDermotts, but the identity of HER grandmother is unclear:

Julia McCormack, of Carrowkeel, was a daughter of John McCormack (1855-1901) and Mary Jane McDermott (1859-1897).

Mary Jane McDermott was a daughter of John Bryan McDermott (b. 30-JUN-1831 in Cloonybrennan, Elphin, Co Roscommon, d. 15-JUN-1896 in Carrowkeel, Elphin, Co Roscommon) and his wife Julia (b. 1836?, d. 28-APR-1888 in Cloonybrennan, Elphin, Co Roscommon)

My cousin Rua believes that the maiden name of John Bryan McDermott's wife Julia (b. 1836) was also McDermott, but my great aunt (Ann) swears that her mother had said that Mary Jane McDermott's mother was born Julia Lynch.  The witness in the marriage record above that you cite (John Lynch) would seem to lend some credence to this belief of my great aunt's: is there any way that you can determine which is correct?

Another cousin, BTW, thinks that it is possible that Julia McCormack's grandmother Julia (b. 1836) may have been married to a McDermott brother and that  John Bryan McDermott married his former sister-in-law after she was widowed, but I haven't been able to find any documentation to support this possibility.

    Many thanks!!

  • If you go to irishgenealogy.ie and look up a birth record for one of Mary Jane's siblings born 1864 or after, you can see that the record says the mother is "Julia McDermott, formerly McDermott." So it seems Rua is correct.

  • Thanks!

Ahem, I don't suppose that there is any way that you could check to see if Julia Formerly McDermott was actually a Julia Lynch who was a widow of a McDermott?

Again, this aunt "has a memory like an elephant", so I am reluctant to toss aside her information without double-confirming it :)
