Seeking information on Laurence Killian

Laurence was born 1859 as calculated from his age on his death certificate in Australia.

According to his death certificate his birthplace was Drum, Roscommon.

The death certificate states his father was Denis Killian, farmer and his mother was Bridget Fanning.

The informant for his death certificate was Laurence's wife, Jane Killian (nee Gaffney)

Laurence had two children born in Ireland: (1) Mary born in 1884; and (2) Josephine born in 1885.  Both children were born at Clara, Kings County (now Offally).  Laurence stated that his occupation for both registrations was shop keeper.

In December 1885, Laurence, Jane and the two children arrived in Australia on the Roma which left from Glasgow.  They disembarked at Townsville.

Laurence and Jane went on to have four more children.  Frances born in 1887 was my grandmother.

He died aged 48 years and is buried in Townsville, Australia.

Unfortunately, I don't know if Laurence had siblings (who have probablly gone on to have children).

Any information and suggestions for sources of information will be gratefully received.

Thank you,  Marilyn.

  • Have you tried reviewing the National Library of Ireland’s microfilm of the parish records?  It’s online.  I found quite a few records for my Watch/Watson and Harney families from Drum.  Look for the Parish of St. Peter and Drum.  Most of the records are in Latin but not surnames.  And you have to decipher the priest’s handwriting.

  • Hullo Another Marilyn - Thanks for this suggestion. Google Translate can help with Latin, I'm told. Good luck with your research. Marilyn.

My great grandfather, John Watch/Watson, born 1834 in Drum married Kate/Catherine Killian in Illinois in 1862.  I believe Kate was from Drum and widowed. She had a daughter Mary born in Illinois about 1855.  In 1870 John’s brother William was living with them as were two Killian.  They were Patrick age 40 and Henry age 35.  Perhaps these Killians are related to yours.  If you come across them or a Catherine marrying a Killian about 1850, keep me in mind.

  • Hi Marilyn - Will certainly let you know if see anything regarding your relatives. I'm sure you're aware of the multiple versions of spelling "Killian". All rather challenging! But we must press on. M.
