  • I've come across a George Crossan in the townland of Knockybrin Townland, Aghanunshan.

Considering the dearth of other information, there is quite a lot online about the George Crossan in Knockybrin Townland.  He was born possibly about 1781.  On the night of 21 October 1859, at the estimated age of 68, he was arrested in Letterkenny by Constable Joseph Keegan for being drunk and was fined 1s5d with 1s costs. He died on 25 March 1867.  He's mentioned in Griffiths valuation.                                              My father's name was George Crossan and he came from a long line of George Crossans who originated in Donegal.  I'm hoping this Aghanunshan George might be one of ours.      Have you had a DNA test?

  • Hi Dori,

The Townland of Knockybrin is next to the Townland of Woodland, where my Crossan relatives came from, so are all related somehow.

Yes, I have had a DNA Test, but am not happy with the result. It is saying that I am from the Inishowen area

  • Hi Grant

I had a DNA test with Ancestry and it has created a bit of a puzzle.  According to the test my Irish roots are Fermanagh, Tyrone Londonderry and Antrim, South Down and North Louth.  I have found ancestors in South Down and Tyrone but nothing in Fermanagh.  What I've found is a lot of actual links to Donegal, including Crossans from Carrick townland and possibly Knockybrin, Strains from North Kilmacrennan, and possibly Ferrys from south Donegal.  My great grandfather chose Dunlevy for a middle name when he went to work in New York in the late 1920s, a name with strong links to Donegal.

I had a look for anyone called Manus Crossan in Scottish records on the off chance he headed in that direction. It seems to me to be an unusual name.  There was one but he was older than yours as he married in Glasgow in 1866 but perhaps he a cousin.

  • Hi Dori,

It gets hard to try and find the Ancestors in the early 1800's due to the Fire that destroyed alot of the paperwork.

I know there Crossans in Antrim, but haven't figured out how, if any are related

  • I am now firmly of the opinion that my Crossans are from Woodland so we are most probably related. Where did you register your dna test?  My results are in two places: Ancestry and Linving DNA.  I

've been trying to figure out who belongs to which family, bringing together whatever I can find online about Woodland  My 2nd Great Grandfather George Crossan was born about 1831 and came to Glasgow in the 1850s with other Crossans who were the children of a James Crossan, who I think was George's elder brother.   I found a Manus who has a son Patrick and that Patrick has son Manus who married Fanny McDaid. I havent found other Manuses but it's difficult, as you say.

I'm in letterkenny today.  I walked up to Woodland and bumped into some other Crossans. I'm off to Belfast tomorrow but the research continues.
