Marcella Scott was my maternal great-grandmother. She was born in Cooldariha in Co Offaly (then Kings County) in around 1843. (Cooldariha was probably the townland of Townland of Cooldorragh.) Marcella’s father was John Scott.
Marcella married Michael Allen (c.1844-1929), a farmer, on 11th July 1876 in Ballinahown Catholic Church in Co Westmeath. She and Michael lived in Bryanmore Upper and Killinenny for the rest of their lives.
Marcella and Michael had the following children: -
- James Allen (1877-1970), my maternal grandfather. James emigrated to Scotland and thence to Australia.
- Michael Joseph (“Joe”) (1878-1930). He emigrated to Scotland
- Patrick (1880-1946). He emigrated to New York City, USA
- William (1881-1948). He worked in Scotland for a time but largely lived in Bryanmore Upper
- John (1883-?)
- Mary 1884 -?)
- Jane (1885-1889)
- Catherine (1888-1889)
- Rose (1891-1922).
Marcella died on 10th January 1939 in Bryanmore. Her age was given as 96 years.
