Back to List

Margaret and Mary Arthur, daughters of Michael Arthur and Bridget McNamara (from Crusheen) who lived at Cragard, came to Melbourne Australia in 1854 and in 1857 their sister Ellen, brother James and cousin Patrick (son of Patrick Arthur and Elizabeth McNamara) and another cousin, James McNamara (whose mother was Bridget Hogan and father Patrick McNamara, brother of Bridget and Elizabeth (above) came on the Grand Trianon.  Other McNamara cousins had arrived earlier. After working in Melbourne, Margaret married a Scotsman called Duncan Paterson who was a sailmaker.  The men of the combined families followed the gold trail to New Zealand then back to Australia where they made their homes on small holdings and mines in the Bendigo region of Victoria.  Of the Arthur family, only Margaret Patterson had children and her descendants are many.  I have no knowledge of the family members who remained in Cragard but there were two more children in the family whose names are recorded and judging by the names of godparents at baptisms their parents had siblings who remained in Ireland.

Margaret Arthur was my great grandmother

Her daughter Mary Robina Veronica Hacket ( Pook) was my grandmother

My mother was Margaret Emma Pook ( Aulich) named after her 2 grandmothers,,borm 1918 died 2010 in Melbourne Victoria Australia

My name is Mary Gabrielle Seelander ( Aulich) born 1957 .Margaret Arthur must have kept the oral tradition of Irish storytelling alive as my grandmother Ruby, and my mother after her told endless stories of Irish myth and folklore. We grew up with a strong Irish Catholic heritage and hearing of faeries and banshhees ,,which was both spell binding and fearsome at the same time.Im grateful to have found this site and to have a small understanding of where this legacy originated..I note an Arthur from Cragard in the Parish details ,I,m wondering if we might be related ?
